In this episode I talk about the idea that as artists we tend to get way too close to our craft. Sometimes we have to take a step back and look at our hobby/career objectively.  Sometimes we have to shift our focus from what is not working to what is.

I also give a little update on what Ive been working on and my UStream miss adventures on the 4th of July.

Oh and btw Commissions are Open!!! lol

Thanks for Listening!!! :)

Good stuff.
I think you should do your work (art or music or whatever) without regard to how money or what other people like comes into play.

I also think you should pursue marketing relentlessly. find your audience and build a community of fans, friends, and customers (not all the same thing). Take care of each group, cause they all serve a function!

There will large pockets of people that don't believe you should make money from making art, and some of those people will be your fans (even friends or family). It's okay for them to feel that way, but it should not deter you from using what God has given you to prosper.

It is possible that no one thing will be the be-all and end-all of your creative career. Maybe it will be a combination of things. I make a little money blogging. A little money from selling my old and new paintings. A little more freelancing. A little from self-publishing. A little from print-on-demand. And I have a job as a cartoonist.

I think creating album cover art is a growth market right now. After decades of shitty graphic design, emcees and singers are back working with illustrators to make cover art and other exras. I've seen more looking at including minicomics and so on as extras on Kickstarter and bandcamp. This might be something you are positioned to take advantage of as a cartoonist and musician.

I really appreciate the encouragement and Idea's Samax! Thanks for listening and giving feedback!

It's really cool to see someone like you in kind of the exact same niche as mine making a living with your art. It's so awesome!!! I hope the best for you and that your success expands!

I am definitely taking your thoughts into heavy consideration!

Nice podcast, dude. I'm also struggling with getting from where I am to where I want to be, and it's a tough road. Good point about how we probably could stand to spend more time on the business side of this stuff than just "the fun part"-I've really got to work harder at that!

Thanks for checkin in Nathan! Well hopefully we can learn together and help each other out! I definitely think you have a unique style that you could make work for you!

I often think about people who are doing podcasting or webcomics and stuff now and for years before me and I can tell these guys one day are really gonna hit it off with one of there properties or something. I think a lot of it is hard work and a matter of time. Getting ourselves ready and in position to take advantage of opportunity when it finally knocks ya know? Anyways thanks again man for checkin in!!!

Thank you sir.
It makes sense to combine your art/music so they advertise one another. You have many gifts and talents. Props for utilizing them all.

K, bye
